EDM Exclusive Artist Review: Wobs
This one goes out to all you true house heads who want to end your weekend off right with a proper DJ and a chilled out Sunday. We had the chance to see Wobs this week, and haven’t been able to get him out of our heads; literally playing his last years set from Lightning in a Bottle (LIB) on repeat all week! If you are going to LIB this Memorial Day Weekend, make sure you see him, and enjoy the amazing set! It might be house, but you will trance out to his laid back personality and vibe he pumps out of his decks. The man is true to the genre he spins, and we can’t get enough of his consistency and love for what’s good. He can control a crowd and turn everybody on the same wave length with his live sets, and that is a skill few DJs posses and master. It is one thing to play club bangers and big room anthems non stop and come out with a high five, but he proves time and time again he is past that sort of immaturity. Smoother than a babies ass, here’s the original set that got us hooked on Wobs back in January 2009, via our friend Dud’s and the Mix Show Podcast on DJ Culture.com. Shoot out to Wobs, and Ryan for aiding in this Sunday’s after-party!

Club Focus Loves House Music!
It’s fucking Tuesday, and there is almost nothing going on within 200 miles; except the best kept secret to step out of Orange County’s posh stereotype, and into a fun night of dancing and chilling at a real bar. A club where they don’t make the line wrap around the entrance to attract more douche bags, and high schoolers’ with fake ID’s.
An old school vibe radiates out of of the Resident Master Wob’s decks, and the doors of the single bouncer entrance of Tapas. I have been a huge Wobs fan since his guest mix on a DJ Culture Podcast back some 4 or 5 years. He is cool and calm attitude creates an unmatched humble and fluid style; sticking to his roots and what he likes, you can tell he is far past searching the top 40 house list to base his set off.
And to boot we just happened to be blessed with a B2B set between the club owner himself Josh Billings, and Wobs; Proving thoroughly this wasn’t their first rodeo! Following the house advantage was an true house head set by the Martinez Brothers, who where received by the fans with open arms. The loving and playful attitude these two brothers share for house music really showed.
In between the change over I had a chance to eat some Birthday cake with just my hands, snag a dollar taco from the back grill, and meet a couple new friends who couldn’t get over these laid back vibes of this old school style club. We talked to a veteran clubber in a kilt who has been part of the OC scene for 10+ years; she explained to me the history of Focus and how this is the longest lasting club in the area despite the ups and down ( with the 9th year anniversary of the club approaching on June 26th)…
And then a British Soccer Hooligan sounding accent came out of nowhere, butting into our conversation with, “It’s so funny how the fat chick over there is complaining how she had to drive 5 miles to this club, and all I can say is… SHUT THE FUCK UP! I came 3500 fucking miles, ditched my girlfriend, and I’m by myself in a different country to come see the famous Josh Billings at Club Focus, and IT’S THE FUCKING SHIT MATE!” If that isn’t a testament to this amazing place I don’t know what is!
I will be back every Tuesday I can, so stay tuned for more deep, funky, real house music follow ups from us hanging out at Tapas!

Friday Frenzy: Norin & Rad
Over the past few months we have not been able to get enough of Norin & Rad from there performance at Audiotistic to having there track “The Gift” be played by the legend Armin Van Buurn during his ASOT 500 performance! This duo from Orange County are destined for greatness, and are on a roll as of late.
Being thrown into the spotlight within the last year, these two are only beginning their mayhem. I had the pleasure of watching them drop epic bombs the entire time at 420 Festival, blending songs like Eric Prydz remix of Depech Modes, “Your Own Personal Jesus” in with a very refreshing mix of progressive house and trance like we had never heard before. These boys know what the people want to here, bring it harder, and with some unmatched style and god damn passion! The last few months have consisted of a brutal list of hits we can’t get enough of.
Their original vs. Recurver vs. BT, “The Gift” shows exactly what kind of style they bring to the table with a melodic course, that brings the euphoric day dream to screeching halt… full of bass; their original “Bloom” has been blowing up every major trance tent for the last few months. While their newest original “Pistol Whip”, and it’s follow up single featured on TATW 423, “Zion” being sure to take off all summer long… And if that wasn’t enough for you, their remix of “Homerun” by Peter Lesko, which re-released yesterday on Beatport will only follow closely behind. Enjoy your Friday with a little dose of Norin & Rad, and make sure to pay them a visit the next time they play near you!

The Do LaB Does It Big For Year 10

Lightning in a Bottle (LIB) is the United States premier art and cultural music festival. With it’s tenth year going on Memorial Day Weekend, being celebrated at the Oak Canyon Ranch in Silverado, CA (outside of Orange County). Incorporating live and interactive art, yoga, speakers, and a wide range of activities in a family friendly environment. Teaching sustainability, accountability, and emotional well being guided by music, and a commune with nature.
You might remember the most amazing stage set at Coachella the last few years being the Do LaB’s due to the mayhem that went on inside the magical worlds they create. The energy pulled you away from the tents and main stages and into a wonderland that communicated to not only the participant, but the artists as well. With hidden water guns blasting over cabana beds in the middle of the party, to stage parties with the whole crowd making its way up and down the stage at free will, Lightning in a bottle will undoubtedly present the same freedom of expression and openness all weekend. With camping included in the weekend pass, take the whole experience in, and enjoy the natural surrounding.
Escape the daily grind and push to change our awareness of reality through a unique spiritual experience along with a very different line up than most are used to seeing at festivals. With headliners like Bassnectar, Glitch Mob, Shpongle, Tipper, and Gramatik bringing the good vibes all weekend! Don’t miss this event with the whole Southern California EDM Exclusive Crew, and check back for more pre/post party updates! Get your tickets soon because it is for sure to sell out!

DEEP: Where House Lives

HOUSE IS MY HEART, and the feeling of walking into the infamous Vanguard for a night at DEEP was enough excitement on its own; but if that wasn’t enough, the fact that Louie Vega, David Morales, and Tony Humphries were headlining made my skin crawl! Marques Wyatt opened, with his usual perfect deep house set. No flashy build ups, or break downs… just floating along to jazzy house music with a side of funk to really set the tone. Louie Vega came on next, playing around on the tables like he was having the time of his life, dropping late 80′s early 90′s New York based tracks. However, it was David Morales who was probably the biggest hit with the crowd.
There was a fairly large gay community in the house, and they had no problem letting you know how “fabulous” his set was! He really worked the crowd, getting us to dancing around singing all the hits. Tony Humphries struggled a little finding his groove, but ended up finding it quick to later tear the house down with tracks like “God Made Me Phunky”…
As if all this wasn’t enough at around 2 am all Three Kings of House jumped on the decks rocking the dance floor until 4 am. It was awesome to see the generation who grew up with these DJ’s come out in full force, considering I was the youngest in the room by probably 10 years plus. Having that older crowd there was amazing for the fact that you didn’t have a lot of belligerent people there to do drugs, or creeper’s who’s sole purpose was to find a girl and get laid. Everybody was a conscious fan of the music, and everyone’s love really showed! In saying that it was an amazing night at DEEP Vanguard, great music, great crowd, and an amazing club!!!

Down With Diplo
I go through moods with my musical taste often; so I can only image how it must feel to DJ the same set all the time, and finally just want to play something you want to hear. Despite barriers, and bullshit Diplo does just that, and hasn’t stopped for almost a decade. Working with some of the hottest producers and artists, in some of the more raw and experimental sides of EDM and indie music, Diplo has no limits holding him back.
When I first heard Diplo, I couldn’t figure out what the fuck was going on in his album… Honestly jaw dropped. One second I was listening to an intense melody of down tempo trip-hip, then hip-hop, and out of nowhere my first taste of the beloved Miami bass style Diplo is so notorious for today. The man can’t make up his mind! Songs like “Florida”, and “Big Lost”, being two of my favorite chill out songs on my home playlists; add them to your post club drive home when your head needs to relax, or for that lazy Sunday when it’s BBQ and blunts all day.
His newest hit production/chill out track, feat. superstar R’n’B artist Usher, “Climax”, is a fresh flavor for anyone to listen to. With undertones and subtle sounds that truly make it something organic, and yet electronic at the same time. Make note of this song, because you will start to be seeing a lot of summer remixes for this track. Diplo himself, Kaskade, Todd Stylez, and Kid Sister’s big brother (Flosstradamus) have already jumped up to the table with few unique takes on the original. If I didn’t already say it, the guy doesn’t have limits. So despite your tastes he deserves some respect, because he makes good fucking music no matter the genre.
